Our actuarial community

At Momentum Group, we are committed to enabling and supporting our growing actuarial community to thrive and succeed in their learning and professional development goals. Together, we aim to enhance a sense of belonging and meaningful engagement within our actuarial community; sharing knowledge and experience and celebrating each other’s success.

We are proud to be able to share this experience with actuarial students during our annual Future Actuaries Day event featured below.

The importance of the actuarial profession and why we've chosen to invest in it

– Risto Ketola, Financial Director

Actuaries are ubiquitous across our operations. The wide area of contribution for actuaries at Momentum Group says a lot about the actuarial profession. The underlying reason for the wide sphere of influence is that actuarial development results in individuals that have skills to offer in mathematical, economic, and business areas. Actuarial studies thus ensure a well-rounded skill set. The actuarial profession also remains one that attracts some of the brightest young minds in South Africa.

Actuarial Youth Bursary Programme

We walk the journey with our actuarial youth bursary students by providing financial aid, study support and guidance to help them reach their academic and career goals. Candidates are also provided with the opportunity to participate in our vacation work programme, receive mentorship from our employed actuarial students and qualified actuaries and connect with our actuarial community. Applications open on 01 June to 31 August 2025.

Actuarial Development Programme

Our in-house Actuarial Development Programme equips employed students with the resources and support required to complete their actuarial board exams and work-based learning in pursuit of their professional designation with either ASSA or the IFoA UK.

Mentorship - a catalyst for actuarial success!

Our Actuarial Mentorship Programme aims to develop our employed actuarial students with much needed support and advice as they navigate work/life balance and the pursuit of their professional designation with ASSA or the IFOA UK. Our mentors and mentees are upskilled in the art of mentorship and mindfully matched to create space for mutual growth and development, with both parties benefiting from each other's experiences and perspectives.

I had a great mentor when I started my career, and it made a significant impact on kickstarting my career. I have a passion to help others in the same way.

Taso Tofas

I’ve found mentoring to be a valuable and rewarding experience. It feels rewarding to contribute to someone else’s career development.

Reflections from our bursary alumni

Mishalin Moopanar

Actuarial Analyst - Momentum Retail Actuarial

The bursary had a huge impact on my life. It gave me the security that my future was pretty much guaranteed. This allowed me to put in a lot more time and effort into my studies, which ultimately gave me the best chance to getting my exemptions.

Hiranya Naidu

Actuarial Analyst - Met Actuarial Valuations

Receiving the bursary was a pivotal moment in my academic and professional journey. It provided financial support, mentorship and a valuable head start in my career. From mentors to bursary coordinators, I was surrounded by people who cared about my growth, and their support helped me navigate the ups and downs of my Actuarial journey.

Kwame Ofosu

Actuarial Analyst - Legacy Product Development Int

The bursary gave me peace of mind to be able to focus on doing the best that I possibly could at university. I also loved that there were an added support system and people who care about my development which was a great factor to help me get through university. The past few months have been a great learning curve, but exciting. It’s wonderful to see how everything I learnt at university is applied in the real world effectively.
